A Free PSHE Lesson Pack for Exam Stress

Exams are not just a test of what students know. They are a test of how well the brain can access what it knows under pressure, and that is a very different thing. This free, three-lesson PSHE unit gives Key Stage 3 and 4 students the brain science behind exam stress, in language built for a 60-minute lesson rather than a textbook. It is designed to sit alongside This Is Possible, the six-week guided journal for teens on exam stress, but it stands on its own — no journal required to teach it. Every lesson plan comes with full teacher subject knowledge built in, so you do not need a science background to deliver it with confidence.

  • 01. Understanding Exam Stress

What your brain is doing. Students learn what's actually happening in the brain and body under exam pressure, and why it's a normal process, not a malfunction.

  • 02. From Reaction to Response

Building your toolkit. Three evidence-based regulation tools, taught and practised live, with the mechanism behind each one explained.

  • 03. Who Am I Without My Grades?

Resilience and self-worth. Separating identity from performance, so a disappointing result stops feeling like a verdict on who a student is.

Not Just What to Teach. What to Say.

Most lesson resources tell a teacher to explain the stress response and leave it there. This pack does not. Every technical concept — the amygdala, cortisol, the prefrontal cortex, the mechanism behind each regulation technique — comes with the full explanation, a suggested opening line, and the questions students are likely to ask. If you are not a science specialist, you can still teach this confidently on a first read.
